Star Cool Bulletin No.: To: From: Date: Regarding: 00204 Star Cool Service Providers, EMR Managers and Customers Star Cool Service Department 5 th August, 2025 Use of chemicals for cleaning of reefers In continuation of bulletin 00130, we would like to remind you of the effects of using aggressive/strong acid and/or base cleaning agents on reefers. These types of agents can cause corrosion, stains, and damage on copper, stainless steel, and aluminium parts. Reefer cleaning best practices - Dos & Don'ts: Do: Use warm water for reefer cleaning Wear appropriate PPE Use neutral pH, properly diluted detergents (if needed) Rinse with water after using detergent Open fresh air vent while reefer is empty Don’t: Use aggressive acids/basic cleaning agents Use products with high chlorine content Apply chemicals through the fan grille Remove backplate for regular cleaning For cleaning Star Cool reefer units, it is recommended to use warm water only. In cases where the reefer has a strong odour, a mild lemon-oil-based detergent may be used. This is sufficient to eliminate any odours. Whenever a detergent is used, the cleaned area must be thoroughly rinsed with clean warm water to dilute and remove any detergent residue. This step is crucial to prevent potential damage to the reefer caused by detergent exposure. To ensure safety and protect the reefer: • Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). • Only use detergents that are properly diluted and have a pH level that is close to neutral. • Apply detergents only to areas where strictly necessary. • Dispose of wastewater in compliance with local environmental regulations. Do not use the following: • Do not use alkaline or strong acid-based detergents (e.g., Aluminol). These substances pose a risk to both personnel and the equipment due to their corrosive nature. • Avoid cleaning products with high chloride content, as these can corrode stainless steel components. It is important to note: • Never apply chemicals directly through the fan grille onto the evaporator fans or evaporator. This practice can lead to corrosion and leakage in critical components. • Do not remove the backplate for regular cleaning purposes. Such disassembly is unnecessary and not recommended unless there is evidence of cargo contamination.
