Integrated Reefer News | Page 3 ‘‘ With a land area of more than two million square kilometres and a total population of just over 56,000, Greenland is the world’s least densely populated country. Tucked away in the southwest corner of this vast island is the world’s most northerly capital city, Nuuk. Around 16,500 people live in Nuuk, with another 33,000 inhabitants spread across 18 cities and approx. 60 permanent settlements, some as small as just a few hundred people. Given the harsh climate and a tiny population density of 0.028 people per square kilometre (4,615 times less than Denmark), maintaining a secure infrastructure is a major challenge. Reaching out to a dispersed population From its headquarters in Nuuk, the Royal Arctic Line (RAL) provides a vital lifeline to the people of Greenland. Owned by the island’s government, RAL handles all sea trade into and out of the country and is also tasked with ensuring a regular supply of food and goods to even the remotest settlements. Sat on the dock of Nuuk’s shipping terminal is a single Star Cool reefer container, serving as a giant onshore mobile refrigerator to store food for the Royal Arctic Line’s Low-energy mobile refrigeration But it is not just on Nuuk’s dockside that Star Cool is serving the people of Greenland.
