Integrated Reefer News | Page 2 Star Cool protocol and COA standard in line The Container Owners Association (COA) recently released an industry standard for a unified data model for telematics systems. To support this, Maersk Container Industry has a fully compliant protocol for reefer communication. Maersk Container Industry (MCI) fully complies with these newly released standard for reefer container protocols. Telematics provide reefer container owners real-time access to critical cargo data. Until now, there have been no industry standards as relates to the telematics Via our own Sekstant reefer connectivity system, MCI allows reefer operators the full benefits of Star Cool’s industry leading technology. systems. Finding a commonality in application program interface (API) was a challenge taken up by the COA. Pioneering standardization work such as this from the COA is crucial for the container transport industry. As reefer equipment interchange is common, the ability for system interoperability is vital for harvesting data. Transparency drives efficiency and this benefits the entire industry – from container owner to end customer. At MCI we are offering telematic system suppliers license agreements for Star Cool protocol in line with the COA standard. An annual administrative fee of US$ 5,000 will apply. The MCI license agreement provides options that go beyond the COA standard. For operators who need additional control and data analytics of their reefer fleet, MCI offers advanced package options – including change of settings and self-diagnostics. Via our own Sekstant reefer connectivity system, MCI allows reefer operators the full benefits of Star Cool’s industry leading technology. “We acknowledge there are reefer operators who may want to test or operate with other IOT devices. It’s for these telematics companies (non-reefer machine manufacturers) that we have created the license agreements. The setup allows them to deliver their platform to their customers in a formalized manner without infringing on MCI’s intellectual property,” said Jakob Vilhelmsen, Head of Star Cool System Control & Digital Service at MCI. Container Owners Association The COA was founded in 2004 as an international organization representing common interests of all owners of freight containers. In 2018 the COA launched the COA Reefer Telematic Data Work Group with the task of arriving at a Unified Data Model (UDM) to provide a single, global definition of data related to reefer containers – a “Reefer Data Classification Schema.” The telematic work group is made up of representative from the four OEMs (including Maersk Container Industry) and seven telematic system suppliers – along with the COA serving as secretariat.
