NEWS Integrated Reefer 1st quarter 2021 February 2021 Reducing our carbon footprint March 2020 while oil prices go up By Søren Leth Johannsen, Chief Commercial Officer Dear Reader, The frantic pace of the market seen in 2020 continues and although we are still only in Q1, production planning is no longer counted as usual in number of weeks, but instead in months ahead and by now we are already into H2, 2021. We are excited to see significant sales performance continuing to add to the more than 45,000 Star Cool reefers delivered in 2020 – marking MCI’s best performance in our 30-year history. Despite the market strength, set against the global challenges of the pandemic, I believe there are many among us who are wondering what other surprises 2021 may have in store. We foresee higher bunker costs, driven by the general increase in oil prices and new environmental tax schemes for the maritime industry. Accordingly, the focus on reducing operating costs and especially energy costs will again be high on the agenda. The Star Cool reefer has the lowest energy consumption of any reefer on the market which has been demonstrated time and time again through independent third-party testing companies - as well as by many of our customers who have run multiple head-to-head trans ocean trials. With operational costs in focus, we take a look at the subject of spare parts options in this first 2021 issue of Integrated Reefer News. Sustainable cost reduction Maintenance is a significant cost component within the shipping industry, making it a constant target for cost-cutting initiatives. After all, it doesn’t feel like a positive use of limited financial resources in the same way as investing in a new reefer or additional staff, for example. Nevertheless, attractive as it may be at face value, saving money on the wrong spare parts can easily end up costing you more in the long run. When it comes to critical components like compressors and controllers, the medium-term costs of lost performance and reliability can quickly eat up whatever perceived savings you might make by buying a substandard copy versus a genuine OEM new or remanufactured part. Food for thought On the subject of investments, it’s been a great confidence boost for us at MCI to see a series of major orders coming in from loyal customers. In January, fruit specialists Dole Food Company confirmed an order for 500 Star Cool units to meet growing demand for its premium cold chain services. We were also delighted to receive the 3rd consecutive order from Crowley Logistics. This time, we’ll be supplying a further 300 reefers, which will further supplement Crowley’s shoreside and inland facilities. It’s good to see yet more of the world’s food transport benefitting from the efficiency and reliability of Star Cool technology. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and wish you all the best for the coming year. Kind regards and stay safe,
